Purchasing an Officer’s commission was an 18th century British tradition and is followed
by the modern day 78th Fraser Highlanders regiment. Suitable candidates must be
proposed and seconded by members. Officers take an active role in the running of Fort St
Andrew’s Garrison.
The rank of Volunteer Sergeant historically was not a N.C.O. appointment but a “holding
rank” for potential officers awaiting a vacancy in the Commissioned Officer’s Cadre.
Today’s Volunteer Sergeant is someone who wants to actively support the Garrison
without necessarily taking a command role.
Regimental Ladies were often associated with regimental activities. The position is open
to all women who wish to actively support the Garrison without necessarily taking a
command role. They will be addressed as “Milady”.
The rank of Private is newly created and is for someone who would like to support our
goals and activities at a modest level.
